Quotes for Researchers

These are quotes collected for data miners, information diggers, researchers, and all those other people using Google:

“What is research, but a blind date with knowledge.”
– Henry William (1774-1836, British Chemist)

“Research is what I’m doing when I don’t know what I’m doing.”
– Wernher von Braun (1912-1977, German Rocket Pioneer)

“After all, the ultimate goal of research is not objectivity, but truth.”
– Helene Deutsch (1884-1982, American Psychiatrist)

– Albert Einstein (1879-1955, German-born American Physicist)

“By seeking and blundering we learn.”
– Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832, German Poet, Dramatist, Novelist)

“Just as the largest library, badly arranged, is not so useful as a very moderate one that is well arranged, so the greatest amount of knowledge, if not elaborated by our own thoughts, is worth much less than a far smaller volume that has been abundantly and repeatedly thought over.”
– Arthur Schopenhauer (1788-1860, German Philosopher)

“Fools make researches and wise men exploit them.”
– H.G. Wells (1866-1946, British-born American Author)

“I find that a great part of the information I have, was acquired by looking up something and finding something else on the way.”
– Franklin P. Adams (1881-1960, American Journalist, Humorist)

“We should burn all libraries and allow to remain only that which everyone knows by heart. A beautiful age of the legend would then begin.”
– Hugo Ball (1886-1927, German Dadaist Poet)

“I keep reading between the lies.”
– Goodman Ace (American Author, Radio Personality)

“The next best thing to knowing something is knowing where to find it.”

And this one in German*:

“Schläf ein Lied in allen Dingen,
Die da träumen fort und fort,
Und die Welt hebt an zu singen,
Triffst du nur das Zauberwort.”
– J. v. Eichendorff (1788-1857, German Poet)

*"Sleeps a song in all things/ that dream on and on/ and the world will start to sing/ if you find the magic word.”

Google Result as RSS-Feed

Rajiv R. just published his tool to convert a Google result into an RSS-feed*: It’s Google.rss.
Such tools have been around before but this time it’s all straight and legal since Rajiv is using the Google Web API to access the results.

For example, the RSS for a Google search on Google Blogoscoped would be
http://eurohost.webmatrixhosting.net/rajivraj/google/rss.aspx?search=google%20blogoscoped

*As you may know, RSS-feeds are an XML-based news syndication format which can be included in a variety of tools, off- and online.

“It’s Google.rss” behaves similar to Google Alert’s RSS-Feed option. It’ll be interesting to find out what people are going to do with Rajiv’s tool.

MapQuest and Google

Just yesterday I talked about how MapQuest and Google could combine their results. Today I read this news:

Street-finder MapQuest is looking for a revenue boost by integrating Google’s commercial search links into its online mapping results.

The America Online subsidiary said Monday that when people enter an address into its mapping and directions tool, Google will provide links on results pages to complementary services such as restaurants, hotels and events. These links are part of Google’s AdWords program, where advertisers pay the search giant a per-click fee for preferred placement in its commercial search results.”
– Jim Hu, MapQuest finds place for Google (CNET News.com), June 23, 2003

I tried the ads for German town Aachen, and the results when clicking on “Hotels” on the MapQuest Aachen page are similar to what is displayed on Google when entering “hotels aachen”.
