Google Officially Denies Gmail is Hoax

For those who just couldn’t believe there would ever be a 1 GB free email account (cancel your Hotmail subscriptions, folks), there’s an official statement regarding Gmail:

“Google’s free e-mail service called Gmail, which will offer significantly more storage than Yahoo or MSN, “is not a hoax,” said Jonathan Rosenberg, Google’s vice president of products. (...)

“It is April Fool’s Day. We were having fun with this announcement. We are very serious about Gmail,” Rosenberg said in an interview.”
– Lisa Baertlein , Google says “Gmail” is no joke, but lunar jobs are (Reuters/ Forbes), 04.01.04

“Jonathan Rosenberg, vice president of the products group at Google, said the Gmail announcement was legitimate. He did concede that the company did get caught up in the spirit of April Fool’s Day in its press release. (...)

“We want to organize and present all the world’s information,” [Wayne Rosing, Google’s vice president of engineering] said, who added that the service will be formally launched in “weeks to months."”

Now what is left to discuss about? Of course: wether it’s pronounced gee-mail or gmail. Or why Butler Jeeves of Ask.com is half-naked today... (“Having Jeeves take off a few layers improves the page performance and besides, no one at an Internet company wears a suit anyway.”) Most of all, it’s time to say Farewell to Hotmail.
