TrustRank

Interesting – Gray Price found out Google registered “TrustRank” as a trademark. This sounds like a more social variant of the link-based PageRank algorithm Google is famous for. TrustRank may be related to a Stanford paper published March of last year; “Combating Web Spam with TrustRank”. This is the abstract:

“Web spam pages use various techniques to achieve higher-than-deserved rankings in a search engine’s results. While human experts can identify spam, it is too expensive to manually evaluate a large number of pages. Instead, we propose techniques to semi-automatically separate reputable, good pages from spam. We first select a small set of seed pages to be evaluated by an expert. Once we manually identify the reputable seed pages, we use the link structure of the web to discover other pages that are likely to be good.”

Comparing AdSense Earnings

If you’re a webmaster using Google’s AdSense, you are probably often wondering if your revenues are reasonable – and if other webmasters have much higher AdSense incomes. The new Google AdSense earnings database “AdMoolah” solves this problem and lets you query typical revenue ranges (a recent change in the AdSense ToS allows everyone to publicize their earnings). For example, a PageRank 6 software site with 38,086 monthly hits makes $17.03 per month. You can help the project by submitting your own AdSense data, too. [Via Battelle.]

In other AdSense news, Google said they’re experimenting with letting advertisers choose target sites. Also, they are testing animated banners.
