The Ultimate Reduction Usability Test

Many sites I often use I find cluttered. To see what would stay on some of those I removed all elements I never used – like navigation items or visual guides – and aligned the left-overs. (This is not to say all of my removals would increase usability, because different people have different needs and interests. It still tells something about the level of “clutteredness” of particular sites.)

• Amazon before | Amazon after
• Gmail before | Gmail after
  (My main Gmail account – not much to take away here.)
• Google before | Google after
• Heise before | Heise after
  (Heise is a German IT news site I read daily)
• Slashdot before | Slashdot after
• Spiegel before | Spiegel after
  (Another German news site.)
• Waxy before | Waxy after
• Yahoo before | Yahoo after
