Feeding AdSense Keywords

Interesting – Findory added two lines to their Google AdSense code to deliver keywords not apparent in the page, thus further specifying what kind of ads may appear independent of what's on the page. The variables are google_kw_type and google_kw, as seen here:

<script type="text/javascript"><!--
google_ad_client = "pub-6121116643406942";
google_ad_width = 160;
google_ad_height = 600;
google_ad_format = "160x600_as";
google_ad_type = "text";
google_ad_channel ="";
google_color_border = "91A7BA";
google_color_bg = "FFFFFF";
google_color_link = "1A00FF";
google_color_url = "91A7BA";
google_color_text = "000000";
google_kw_type = "broad";
google_kw = "Tech then about with that blog this between arousal delhi windows stopped drunk specifi interview biggest calif oscar settled they";
//--></script>
<br />
<script type="text/javascript"
  src="http://pagead2.googlesyndication.com/pagead/show_ads.js">
</script>

I wonder if this is a standard feature I'm missing, and if this is allowed for everyone to use (usually, you are not supposed to fiddle around with your AdSense code, and Google may easily track those who do – so if this is an experiment Google allows Findory to participate in, it may not be wise to simply copy it). Greg Linden of Findory adds:

"This early version is built on top of Google AdSense, but these are not normal AdSense ads. They are not targeted merely to the content of the page, but to the individual behavior of each reader."

Update: Jason S. in the comments writes: "I looked online earlier and found a forum posting from February that explained this is a feature that premium publishers are allowed to use when their ads aren’t being targeted as well as they should be. And Google must approve of its use."

Update 2: Here's the original forum post. [Thanks Jason.]
