Yahoo vs Google: Size
Yahoo say they now index 19.2 billion web documents. Google, according to their front-page, index 8.2 billion web pages. Is Yahoo surpassing Google? While their figures sound impressive in comparison, there’s some things to keep in mind here:
- Relevancy, not size, is and always will be the key – and it’s hard to measure.
- Google still often indexes new content faster (not always, though).
- The number Google shows on the front-page may not at all reflect their current status. CNet quotes a number of “11.3 billion” last given by Google.
- Just what makes a web page is hard to say. If a search engine would exclude portions of automatically generated content (some of it spam, for sure) this would not necessarily be a bad thing.
