Google has acquired web word processor Writely. (The rumors were true.) Jen Mazzon of the Google Writely Team in the official Google Blog comments:
“To be clear, Writely is still in beta, and it’s far from perfect. Upholding our great user experience means everything to us, so we’re not accepting new registrations until we’ve moved Writely to Google’s software architecture. If you’re interested in giving us a try, we hope you’ll get on the waitlist so we can let you know when you’ll be able to try out Writely.”
Over at Writely, the FAQ states:
“How will this change your product plans for Writely?
We haven’t yet figured out all the details. Coming to Google will eventually give us a leg up on getting things done that we just haven’t been able to with our tiny team. But this will take time – our team isn’t going to grow exponentially overnight – so please don’t hound us with feature requests any more than you have been already!”
So, the Google Office now got email (Gmail), an HTML editor (Google Pages), a word processor (Writely), a sort of database system (Google Base), a programming environment (the Google Homepage API), and soon, a calendar. What else is missing? What about Excel and PowerPoint?
