Why does Gmail toolbar indicator keep going on and off

i got the little dialog box saying 'sign in.' I do, and it's green. then it's not.

anyone else having this problem? I get the SIGN IN pop up diaglog box when I boot up...and that little green light on the toolbar keeps going off.
