Google's favicon is not the final one yetZim | Saturday, June 7, 2008 16 years ago • 8,625 views |
We can breath: Google's "new" favicon won't be the definitive one! Officially announced by Marissa Mayer in the official Google blog, "By no means is the one you're seeing our favicon final; it was a first step to a more unified set of icons." In the post, there's an image with some icons: http://bp1.blogger.com/_7ZYqYi4xigk/SEnK37orPGI/AAAAAAAAAp4/gR3gdZ6sgbU/s400/favicon_iterations.jpg
Now is our time to give feedback!

Prefer the old over any of those TBH. Definately don't like the 'rounded square' idea they seem to be going with |

You can suggest your own favicon: http://www.google.com/faviconideas/ |

I wouldn't mind having the favicons 12...9...10...11...10...9...12... from upper-left in top-row a n i m a t e d vvvvveryyyyy slowly, the lowercase Garamond(-y) "g" growing out of frame and back again, fade-to-next-frame style. It's a .gif, innit? |

Here, an easier way to say which you like, if its above the RED line You start with R and then the number, ok? so for me R4 looks like the iPhone image, but the ones I really like: B9, B10, G1, G6, G8, P10 looks kinda like my original favorite, but doesn't G14 remind you of windows XP?

I like B8, B9, O4, P10
G14 does look a bit Bliss-y
Ianf Sounds good, would look better with a Capital G :-P |

I like the circle best.
Probably because it is most like the old favicon.
(It's in column 10, on the bottom row). |

Ouch, colors are a little screwed! I'll write with the good old coordinates. My favorite so far is (8;5), those cubes are simple, and they don't aim any particular product. The (11;1) is quite nice, I thought about something like this before: a G "zoomed" like through a glass. And I like the concept in (11;4). I'm trying to figure out how to do something like this to submit. I think that something pointing to different places is like "we cover all", and that's a good image. (Say.. it's something like a compass) (However, I still like the old squareish button.) |

Let's do an animated favicon.ico... it should take Firefox hackers approx. 24 hours to come up with a plug-in to enable that! Then people'll start complaining of them, and in no time at all other teams will come up with scripts to block it, then scripts-to-counter-the-blockers, and so on. Hey, that's progress! ;-))

The lowercase "g" --animated or not-- has one big advantage over its uppercase instance, "G" – visually "g" it is far more distinct, recognizable at a glance, AND harder to misread, than any by-design EQUAL HEIGHT UPPERCASE letter. That is why ALL-CAPS is never used in copy text, but chiefly in titles, subheads, stand-alone flash items (=typographic terms all), and other stand-out elements. In this particular case[sic!] we're also talking of an icon made up of a single, unaccompanied-glyph symbol, by definition undistinguishable from any other. And harder still to acquire at a glance were its uppercase glyph to "fill out" more of its parent cell, than the lowercase one does [=all acc. to empirically gained wisdom, if any, during 10-odd years in the typographical trades.] |

Some of the new favicon iterations Marissa posted about are okay... Primarily the ones with white backgrounds which remind me of Google's home page – Clean.
I think I still like the simplicity of the original Google favicon the best, so I submitted the original Google favicon – Maybe they'll switch back to it?! :)

I'm quite sure they already know we (I mean... a lot of users) are not happy with the new icon and like the old one. But I think they want to view new ideas rather than hearing complains, and that's ok too. |

I wasn't complaining, I was just giving them my feedback ;) |

I think they should just use the favicon from Google Groups. Strangely, it is not in the image set of samples above. When I see it, nothing but Google comes to mind. It retains the capital "G" from their logo which screams Google ("g" doesn't). It has a lighter blue background and is enclosed in a circle, not a square. This differentiates it from the darker blue and square shape of both Microsoft's and Facebook's icons.

Thanks man and by the way, I didn't expect them to be larger than 16x16 above! :) |
