Google Maps now shows detailed maps of major China cities instead of only showing in the ditu.google.cn domain:

Maybe something to do with the Olympics? |
I also heard of changes to Google Maps Japan today. Leonardo writes:
<<I want to tell you that the google maps japan have changed the layer map, I think from today!
the name of some houses or commercial activities are now written on the house like the japanese real maps!>>

This is a great news for Chinese users! Look Shanghai, yesterday it was only a simple dot on Google Maps, now there are more details. |
Interesting to notice the differences. What I notice immediately is:
– The street names don't follow the curvature of the road. The letters always remain in a vertical position. – The Satellite overlay does not show the street "labels". – The Satellite overlay is not properly aligned with the road maps. It seems to be off by a quarter/half a screen when zoomed in fully. – Place names are in English – for me, other non-US countries names/labels appear in their native language – There are map icons/names representing restaurants, hotels, banks, etc. These remind me of the icons on the desktop version of Microsoft Streets & Trips. |
You missed the most critical problem – the sat view and street views do not match up. Come on google! |
