it'll be available only by "invitation" at first. Our tipster doesn't have information on how those invites are going to be determined, other than the fact that it's Google doing the inviting – if we had to guess, current registered developers are a strong possibility – but the good news, we suppose, is that T-Mobile will apparently sell the phone directly at some to-be-determined point in the future. Oh, but that's not all – we've got specs, too. Lots of them. Here are the highlights, but follow the break for the whole shebang: Android 2.1 11.5mm thick 512MB RAM, 512MB ROM, 4GB microSD in-box expandable to 32GB 5 megapixel camera with mechanical AF and LED flash HSPA 900 / 1700 / 2100, 7.2Mbps down and 2Mbps up – in other words, yes to T-Mobile 3G and no to AT&T 3G, though you'll still be fine on EDGE 3.7-inch WVGA AMOLED display

Check out a 5:00 walkthrough video of the Nexus One! Somebody in France has been playing with the Le Google Phone in front of a camera! |
I don't see anything in the hardware specs that is Earth-shatteringly different that it would require thousands of employees to dog-food it. I also can't think of a reason why a piece of hardware should be sold by invitation only (assuming that to be true). There was a reason why GMail, GVoice and GWave were rolled-out by invitation only: so that Google could gradually ramp up the cloud infrastructure to support those services, fix early bugs, AND get information about which user is "e-related" to which other user (social network map).
Where am I going with this comment? I wonder if there is a hidden feature or service, beyond the mere N1 hardware itself, that warrants dog-fooding and necessitates the gradual build-up with an invitation-only roll-out. Any guesses on what such a service or feature might be? |
its a pure marketing gimmic when people dont hav nexus onethey will shout about it in blog and google get free publicity |
A S http://blogoscoped.com/forum/165313.html#id165331
They're dog-fooding it for the software...
And the invitations, if it is sold by invite, will not be like other Google services where you get an invite and can invite your friends...
BizAbh You're referring to the same sort of invites as A S i assume. Although yes, it doubles as a marketing tactic, it is not purely such, as it does serve an important technical purpose.
So, who would most likely be invited to try the Nexus One first and how could one increase their chanced of being on the invite list? All top 100 blogoscoped users? xD |
