A new labs project is about to be launched... it's called Google Music Trends.

The google.com robots.txt file just changed a few minutes ago listing the new feature as "Disallowed"

google talk has been updated now too... it asks for your permission to send data to the music trends service.

TOMHTML [PersonRank 10]

/pd : only USA because of this
"Sorry, we don't have enough data yet to give you a meaningful report. Please check back later, or click here to see an overall worldwide report."

For my own, I have already made an article about that

Garett is right, there is a new checkbox in Google Talk, and this link :

Niraj Sanghvi [PersonRank 10]

And from here (http://www.google.com/support/talk/bin/answer.py?answer=43428):

Signing up for Google Music Trends will also enable Personalized Search, so that **your music listening history will be available to you from your Search History page**. You can opt out of Personalized Search, or pause your Search History, at any time.

(emphasis mine)

Sounds like Personalized Search could become an RIAA goldmine for some!

yeah Niraj is right.. this is an optin opportunity and could create a goldmine for the music business ..

Niraj Sanghvi [PersonRank 10]

TOMHTML, I already posted a reply...it's just taking forever to show up.

Also, it looks like the Google Labs page link to the Google Group is broken (it left out the word Labs). The Discuss link from the actual Music Trends page works though.

Nice Find.

Sohil [PersonRank 10]

Hmm I don't get the "Your music listening history will be available to you from your Search History page" notification. I currently enabled the "Show Current Music Track" Feature.

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

Sohil > Are you using the official latest release or the last beta version? I used to have that option until I just upgraded now.

Sohil [PersonRank 10]

Probably the Beta. I've been away and just got back so it probably didn't update it.

Is 1.0.0.96 the current version ?

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

Yep but you might want to try a "Check for Updates Now" just to be sure.

Google has posted about new features in their blog.

"... Music status sharing – Show your friends what music you listen to and discover new music that your friends are into (or discover that they spend their entire day listening to Barry Manilow... hmm). We also thought it would be fun for you to see the musical tastes of the broader community. So you now have the option of sharing your music listening history with Google, to be included in the rankings of our new Google Labs project called Music Trends.

Finally, we have some updates targeted at developers such as support for a new voice codec which we'll talk about in an upcoming post. And now, I'm off to record that message for my mom...
"
http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2006/08/more-ways-to-connect-and-share-with.html

I wish you could have history of what your friends listen to (just for fun) – some kind of "friend's music trends"

Hmm Ya I see it now. Thanks

I use iChat to access the Google jabber server. My status message is my current song (iChat also has that feature), so it would be nice if Google would collect data from me as well.

hmm interesting but not sure what google's trying to do exactly. anyone want to give an example where this could lead??

[put at-character here]phillip- from the slow day today, you should include this as an article..

Interesting to see ZDnet is located in Germany... at least according to Google News. Actually, they list Googling Google as being from "Bavaria".

how did they know I moved to Germany????? damn, Google knows WAY too much.....

just kidding ;)

SCJM [PersonRank 10]

So it's like lost.fm but they are trying to make you use Google Talk?

Chris Riley [PersonRank 3]

That would be http://last.fm , not lost.fm – which on the face of it has been running for much longer, has a much better way of integrating and reporting back what you are listening too, and allows you to listen back to styles of music you listen to, tag music, loads of charts etc. A far better website for this kind of thing than this labs project could ever hope to be just using Google Talk. Not to be down on Google or anything....

Is it clear to anyone whether Google Personalized Search will give you a history of the music you've been listening to even if you choose not to show it in your Talk status message?

Ionut Alex. Chitu [PersonRank 10]

Yes, there's a new tab called Music there, but I can see only one song, although I've played much more. Maybe it's just buggy for now.

photoactive [PersonRank 10]

The answer seems to be no.

Which is a shame really. Having a history of what you've listened to is a really nice feature, but it only shows what you've listened to while your Talk status message has been set to "Show current music track".

Ionut Alex. Chitu [PersonRank 10]

The answer seems to be yes.

Ionut Alex. Chitu [PersonRank 10]

I think that Google records the song data if you check "Share song history", but don't show the song in status. This need to be tested to be sure.

photoactive [PersonRank 10]

Right. Other people should test it. I've been switching "Show current music track" off and on. The songs that have been playing when it's on show up in Search History, and the ones that have been playing when it's off don't. (I've had "Share song history" on throughout.

Ionut Alex. Chitu [PersonRank 10]

It makes sense:

You can opt in or out of Music Trends at any time:

In your Google Talk client, click Settings.
Click Audio in the left navigation bar.
Click the Share music listening history with Google Music Trends checkbox.
Click OK to apply your change.
Signing up for Google Music Trends will also enable Personalized Search, so that your music listening history will be available to you from your Search History page.

Ionut Alex. Chitu [PersonRank 10]

Tested. I think you're right: Google shows a song in the history only if it's in the status.

Oh, well, my Winamp already records the play history, so it wouldn't be too useful.

TOMHTML [PersonRank 10]

Ionut, you're the best :)

Stephen Tordoff [PersonRank 10]

This appears to be of limited use at the moment, as the data only looks to have come from a few users.

However, good find as always!

Awesome feature. Slowly Google is adding all the usual features and better of an IM software.

Keep on rolling (out new features)

It is great idea, but one of the first mistakes I noticed is the difference between Hindi and World music. For an example: the top four song in the "World" section is: 4 Where's The Party Tonight – Web Search Sonu Nigam & Alka Yagnik – Web Search
New!

This is an Indian song in Hindi from the recent Kabhi Lavida Naa Kehna, but this song is not anywhere in the top Hindi songs.

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

I've got some weirdness going on with this feature in Google Talk.

I've been listening to one album and I know I've only listened to it once. I've not stopped any of the tunes or listened to them more than once and yet my "Search History" is showing that I've listened to a couple of them four times. Looks like a glitch to me!

TOMHTML [PersonRank 10]

Google Music Trends updated!
Countries added : Brasil, India, Canada and UK.
The category "Variété Française" (french music) deleted.

Mrrix32 [PersonRank 10]

There's now more categories, but their different for different countries. I'm just happy because it's in the UK now.

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Tony, now that you mention that glitch I figured maybe someone could abuse the system... you know, push certain albums up the charts through a distributed malware or something. Well, I guess right now it wouldn't have any effect on sales, it's probably only of interest as soon as Music Trends becomes more prominent...

Ionut Alex. Chitu [PersonRank 10]

Until then, GTalk will have more than 44000 users in the US and even more globally :)
