Google has aquired JotSpot (www.jot.com), a player in the collaborative online publishing field. Should be a good fit with Docs/Spreadsheets/etc.

Great service, but I wonder. Does Google buy technology or mind-share?

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

I'd never even heard of JotSpot. Sounds interesting. Here are some interesting snips from their FAQ:

<<

Why is Google acquiring JotSpot?

Google shares JotSpot's vision for helping people collaborate, share and work together online. JotSpot's team and technology are a strong fit with existing Google products like Google Docs & Spreadsheets, Google Apps for Your Domain and Google Groups.

...

Will paying customers still be charged?

We will no longer be billing customers for the use of the service. Although you will still have use of the product at your current pricing plan, we won't charge you anymore when your current billing cycle expires.

maybe they are just elimanting competation.. after all Jotspot is more of Project Mngt and Collobrative platform..

Why do I have the feeling Google is just interested in the people and not the product?

What will remain of JotSpot if it is integrated into Writely/Docs/Pagecreator? Will writely become more wiki-like?

Who have already heard about "Jot" or "JosSpot" before?

From the forum 4 months ago:

Simon:
<<I'm a big fan of Google, but I do think they are squeezing the revenue of innovative web companies.

Take Jotspot as an example, if Google were to launch a similar offering it would inevitably be a free service. Who would then pay Jotspot for a similar product?>>

Niraj Sanghvi:
<<Simon, that's why Jotspot should either provide the service free and use ads to make money, or get acquired by Google :)>>

I have heard of JotSpot, but am not familiar with.

Looking at their blog http://blog.jot.com/ , it looks like they have a lot going on:

-Wiki
-Calendar
-To-do lists
-Spreadsheet
-Photogallery
-Family Site

Wow, pretty ugly. Still, the concept is sound and that's the key.

Having seen it in action, I can see this as being a neat way to tie together Google Applications for your Domain. Currently each service stands alone, using the JotSpot metaphor (and replacing their calendar/spreadsheet/document/photo implementations with Google's) would be a neat way to group them together more tightly.

If I get invited does this mean I can set up my own wiki?

/pd [PersonRank 10]

guys, I am just sendin out the invite to whoever is asking.. not sure if what can/is happening at the backend.. :)-

Can someone share their experince and what happens when you actually get an invite (Nate /Carl ??) , do I need to set up permissions or can you do all that yrself ?

Jonathan [PersonRank 0]

I get invited to work on your wiki. I thought an invite would entitle me to my own account and JotSpot kind of like how Writely is/was.

Jonathan, I am not sure at all on what the invite does or even if it works :)-

Everyone, please only contact Peter as described above or use Sam's login, please don't ask for invites in this thread, as that usually "explodes" very quickly :)

I used Jotspot at the last small company I worked for, and for my 3 man team that were in a business plan contest.

The most powerful aspect of JotSpot that I saw was when one of my partners in the contest uploaded a spreadsheet into JotSpot, and it turned it into a fully functioning web form. He literally programmed a web form with just an excel sheet.

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

Looking at screen shots (like this one http://blogoscoped.com/files/jotspot/ 1-page.png) Couldn't Google have done this by doing Page Creator + Google Spreadsheets + Google Calendar + Writely + PWA ???

Ok the Updates via RSS are not working.. they need to take care of that..

JotSpot could also be the leverage point against sharepoint2007!! :)-

and this is how it looks in my reader for the RSS for changes..

The Google Enterprise blog just joined with an announcement, but the post is now removed (?):

<<We think Jotspot is a hotspot for enterprise. (...)

JotSpot made a name for itself as well as the category of application wikis --- as a platform for collaborative applications. JotSpot makes it easy for companies of all sizes to use wikis for collaboration in their intranet or for managing projects. (...)

We're excited about what that could mean for our enterprise customers. So, welcome Joe and team. We look forward to putting those wikis to work.>>

JotSpot is now in a row with many other Google acquisitions in this nice AJAX timeline:

[Thanks Pete A.!]

In comparison to jotspot, I find google's offerings slightly more polished, less clutter, and I like the colours better, but if the acquisition makes google happy, then I'm happy too.

I'm the only "Jenny" in the forum! I checked all the messages and they are all mine. :oS Peter, you said you sent me an invite, but I didn't receive it yet.

Is there anyway to get rid of the "Jenny McCarthy" link associated with my name – Jenny – that I use in this forum?

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Jenny – as soon as you start using your full name, or something a lil more unique, more features will be available for your nick. For example, Jenny X. (X being the first letter of your surname) would work. If you have a homepage/ blog of some sort, you can also use a name appearing on your homepage. At the moment there may be others talking here who are named Jenny, so that's why not all features work for your first name only...

JennyPenny [PersonRank 6]

=o(I think I'm the only Jenny here. I visit your website from home and at school, that's it. My IP adds come from Ont. Canada. My ISP's name rhymes with "cell". LOL And I use DSL.... arg.

Fine, I guess I'll have to come up with a "unique" name... =o(I shall think about it while I pack my stuff (I'm moving to a bigger place – yay).

I have a blog, but it's not searchable on Google or other search engines. What happens then?

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

And if you don't find a good name you can also just use "Jenny X".

Mambo [PersonRank 10]

Jenny X has a cool ring to it :)

JennyPenny [PersonRank 6]

=O(

I don't like "Jenny X". LOL =O(I'm gonna have no internet access for 4 business days starting at 2 am... and no phone for 2 days. =OS So frustrating... I hate coming up with "web IDs"...

=O(*SIGH~* You know, my immature friends call me "Jenny Craig" (the weight-loss program lady), "JC Penny" (clothing store), and "Jenny Penny". Maybe I should use one of those names.

I'm the only "Jenny" here(!!!)... I don't know why you guys won't believe me. I wrote all those posts. =...o(

=o(When am I gonna get to try JotSpot? waaa~

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Jenny, we believe you are you! :)
Tho even when you're the only Jenny that ever posted here, another Jenny might come along, and then she'll suddenly have your icon, PersonRank, special homepage link (once I created those for you) and what-not...
Jenny Penny sounds cool, why don't you go with it :)
Then, if you tell me your blog's URL, I can tweak the link if necessary, which was your original question...

Hahahahah...!!!

Hmm... I guess "JennyPenny" DOES kinda sound cool, eh? LOL Okay, so I'll be known as "JennyPenny" from now on. Um, and I do have a blog – a new blog. Couldn't come up with a "cool" name for a blog, but here it is! concertos-concertos.blogspot.com.

So Peter and I are the only Canadians here? That's sad.

Thanks for your help!
