Noticed the patent search a few days ago but didn't comment on it because the vast majority of my last few comments have been facts there existed for roughly 3 years. I can't possible fathom why patents would be close to important enough to put on the front page. Hum, guess Google knows what they are doing, eh?

Here's a reason. They want to put all their search services (google.com/options/) on the homepage: blogs books catalogs [not yet] desktop directory [outdated] finance [not yet] froogle images maps news patents scholar [only for .edu mails or in campus] video web

(Eytan, don't hesitate to drop me an email if you see something new, too... I appreciate every tip, old or new, because it's impossible for all of us to always know whether or not something's new.)

I think they want to tell us: don't mess with our patents

Professional researchers do not use Google to search for patents (they lack recency and codification of the data) and consumers do not search for patents. This has particularly limited appeal and my estimate is 4 weeks or sooner before it is removed.

It's weird how they're rolling this small feature out. It seems Video is the only one who has gotten on the bandwagon. I got it first on the Classic page and then about an hour later on my Personalized page, Images, and News. Maps and Desktop not too long later.

My theory is that Google is adding stuff to the "more>>" link based on what you have visited (where "you" is a particular Google ID).
Has anyone seen "Patents" under more>> without first visiting Google's patents search? I would prefer to have control over this feature – I've got Patents on my more>> list for checking it out once even though I may never visit it again.
There was another thread about this: blogoscoped.com/forum/79868.ht ...

Definitely not true. Sign out of Google, clear your cookies, restart your browser, then go to Google.com.
