"Opera Software (OSE: OPERA) and Yahoo! (Nasdaq: YHOO) today announced a new strategic partnership for which Opera has named Yahoo! as the exclusive provider of mobile search on its millions of Web browsers for mobile phones, Opera Mini™ and Opera Mobile™, across more than 100 countries worldwide. Opera will launch the new Yahoo! oneSearch™ when it goes live globally later in Q1 2007."
For those of you who use Opera Mini on your mobile phones, this is kind of a disappointment. I wonder why Google didn't re-up their agreement with Opera? Seems like a big loss for the big G. What do all of you think? |
Hmm. Wouldn't it be better for Opera users if they at least the choice, so that they can configure Google to be the search if they prefer? |
It would seem that way and just today the Opera Mini page updated their image from Google to Yahoo Search:

Yahoo probably forked over a lot of money to be the default search engine in the best mobile browser.
This is currently how it looks like before today:

I don't know about on the Wii but Opera for Nintendo DS has Yahoo as the default search already, fortunately you easily change it though (one of the first things I did) |
All 3 phones (I think) in the UK come with heaps of Yahoo stuff on there. I don't have one – but I have seen it on my sisters. The first thing I did was search for Google... |
Sam's right. My Nokia N73 came with Yahoo Go! installed (not the recent 2.0 version) which includes Mail, Messenger, Photos, Calendar, Address Book, etc. No sign of Opera Mini though – I had to download that myself. (Although I tend to use the built-in browser instead and have all my Google Mobile stuff bookmarked.)
It also has MSN Messenger installed by default. No sign of Google Talk though.
Also, if you go to the "Planet 3" option (which is their mobile web "portal") and select "Internet", for some reason it sends you to a page listing some mobile applications (not really the Internet) which has a Yahoo! search box at the bottom.
When I was getting the phone and signing the contract, I was careful to check that I could access *any* website and install *any* application as all their materials said something like, "Access the Internet using Yahoo! Go." |
