Boot into command promt (should be option key on startup)
c:format *.* |
you can recover data from drives that have been formatted (there are forensic tools to do just that) – in order to be *really* sure you have to make sure that every sector on the disk is wiped.

If you: A) Don't care if people can find your data again B) Run windows
Boot from the windows XP CD, go to recovery console, login if need be and type Format C: |
Or use a Linux Live CD and at the partitionner stage, choose to erase the disk |
