Probably related to this: http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2007/05/restrict-google-image-results-to-faces.html

Is it just me or is the faces thing a direct rip-off of exaleads "content" image search. Of which faces was the first category. Also someone recently asked how if Google let old images in even if they are relevant and if they should. maybe the "news" one will let in the new images or maybe there will be a new category for time or maybe the timeline thing.

Nice... So many power in one search engine.

This is a pure copy of Exalead, a French search engine which launch that same feature April 23rd...
Read more on their blog, in English: http://blog.exalead.com/2007/04/exalead_becomes.html

I'm enjoying searching for random things with the face command enabled, e.g. tomato:
http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&safe=off&q=tomato&btnG=Search+Images&imgtype=face

TOMHTML [PersonRank 10]

Just enter [ass] ...

James Xuan [PersonRank 10]

The following image may be NotSafeForWork and the Yahoo links definately are. Proceed with caution

Searching for TOMHTML's suggestion with the &imgtype=faces on Google gave me this

myspaceantics.com/images/funny/ass-no_head.jpg

plus a load of pr0n.

On exalead it gave me this finer

www.madradhair.com/profiles/pics/Bad_ass_Blonde-1.jpg

plus a load on non sex related faces.

SafeSearch off on bith for equality. So if you want pr0n use Google, or if you want sex related images for any query use yahoo. eg http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A0geu6NxY1lGCAEACVJXNyoA?p=google&fr=yfp-t-501&toggle=1&ei=UTF-8&vc=&fp_ip=IE&fr2=tab-web and http://images.search.yahoo.com/search/images;_ylt=A9gnMiN.Y1lGi6sANDqJzbkF?p=yo&ei=UTF-8&fr=yfp-t-501&fp_ip=IE&x=wrt
If you have kids who want pr0n tell them to use exalead coz it dosen't give much out.

You can not add the '&imgtype=' DIRECTLY after the search string to refine your image results to Faces or News related images....

Try it....see the differences in the images!

Perhaps there are new ones coming out – can anyone find any others

Yep, it's working!
I did some tests with the types draw/drawing, map/maps, blog/blogs; but they didn't worked. There must be more to be discovered!

Actually if you really want pr0n I suggest you give a second chance to Exalead : go to "preferences" and set the "Adult content filtering" option to "Disabled" and save.
Then chose image search and append [adult:] at the beginning of your queries like this [adult:job]. Try it versus [job] ...

It was really interesting to experiment on my own photos, because I know them all, so I could draw some conclusions.

Google says it has "about 772" of my photos indexed:
http://images.google.com/images?svnum=100&hl=en&safe=off&q=site%3Ajubi.buum.pl

50 of them are "faces"
http://images.google.com/images?svnum=100&hl=en&safe=off&q=site%3Ajubi.buum.pl&imgtype=face

It's interesting to see, that faces are recognized in the multiple photos placed together in one file (photo-compositions) like here
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:CCTkI5yglt7leM:http://www.jubi.buum.pl/i/g-photo-week/images/Aga-Motylek.jpg

and sometimes even half-faces are recognized
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:WIa20drJ_ADLnM:http://www.jubi.buum.pl/i/g-photo-week/images/Natalia-dom.jpg

and sometimes not
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:3uChT77MZNamtM:http://www.jubi.buum.pl/i/portfolio/images/Usta.jpg
not recognized as face, although for the human eye, it is clearly face

there were many unrecognized faces, like these:
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:bflyrIktcWnkEM:http://www.jubi.buum.pl/i/g-photo-week/images/Kobieta.jpg

(although the thumbnail for this 2-photo-composition is recognized as face http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:a4HR3l4eP-DYoM:http://www.jubi.buum.pl/i/portfolio/thumbnails/Kobieta.jpg)

there were no false positives, the only one exception being this sculpture
http://tbn0.google.com/images?q=tbn:8HIDJkOhF5ikbM:http://www.jubi.buum.pl/i/angels2002/images/Cmentarz-Rakowicki-11.jpg

although a face, but made of stone ;) (ok, I know, must look like human to the googlebot)

I love the face feature, it's pretty well done.

Combining the "site" operator with the face search as Piotr does is very interesting. Here's a Flickr search trying to find only Creative Commons licensed photos:

http://images.google.com/images?svnum=10&hl=en&imgc=color&safe=off&q=site%3Aflickr.com+filetype%3Ajpg+%22additional+information%22+%22some+rights+reserved%22&btnG=Search+Images&imgtype=face

Lazyweb idea: grab the first 1,000 ones in good resolution and create FlickrFaces.com, a "Pretty or Not" application (for sorting & ranking, users can vote for beauty on a scale of 1-10, and every once in a while are asked to tell if they're seeing a male/ female, kids /adult face).

Restricting the face search to this site shows that cartoons are indexed as well, as long as they're human-like cartoons, like this one:
http://blogoscoped.com/files/matt-cutts-video.png

This one on CoverBrowser.com works too:
http://www.coverbrowser.com/image/love-rockets/11-1.jpg

Is there any reason to believe that Google is doing an artificial-intelligence analysis of these photos? Surely the underlying technology is Google Image Labeler?

Piotr, do you have permissions enabled for Google Image Labeler in your Google Webmaster Tools?

Either way, it's very impressive.

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

Roger, it seems to work for every site I tried so far (using the "site:" operator along with the "imgtype=face" parameter), isn't the Labeler Game restricted to images from webmasters who agreed to the game via their webmaster tools? Not sure...

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

> Surely the underlying technology is Google Image Labeler?

Hmm, without SafeSearch enabled, sometimes adult images turn up when using the imgtype=face parameter... adult content is not part of the Image Labeler game though is it?

Ionut Alex. Chitu [PersonRank 10]

This is clearly a face detection technology because the results are very good. It's hard to rely on the labels to find images that include faces.

I think the image labeling progresses very fast lately (due to aggressive promotion), so we could see the new image search engine later this year.

Hi, we have now been working for a while on a prototype, proof-of-concept image search engine called Behold that combines visual concept analysis with traditional text search.

http://www.beholdsearch.com

It currently indexes over 1 million images from university websites (obviously much smaller scale than Google). So far it handles 57 visual concepts which can be helpful when extracted html metadata is poor. It can do what this article says, i.e. restrict search results obtained through traditional search by the probability of the image containing a particular visual concept. This feature is available here for you to try:

http://go.beholdsearch.com/searchc.jsp

More about this feature on this blog post:

Roger, my Google Webmaster Tools/Enhanced Image Search status says:

"You have opted-in to enhanced image search. To opt-out, simply clear the checkbox and click OK."

I don't remember when I signed up for this feature, but it must have been a year or more ago I think.

Indexing images by faces is a logical step for Google Image and should appear also soon in Picasa, unless automatic face finding is not yet fast enough! As a matter of fact, as all images retrieved by Google have been processed off-line while for indexing my personal photos using Picasa I might need real-time stuff!

Here is another demo of face image indexing (and tagging) using Google Image and a on-the-fly face detection: http://www.idiap.ch/googleportrait/

That one works very well Sebastien.

Thanks.

Don't hesitate to send me any feedback, we are still looking for improvements. We plan next to use automatic face recognition using collected data (image + tags), applying the same technology we transfer to Bananasecurity (www.bananasecurity.ch) and to its free biometric lock screen (BananaScreen).
