Does anybody know exactly how long it took to get from Writely to Google Docs? |
As far as I can see, it was acquired officially on March 9th, 2006 and only released as Google Docs on October 10th, 2006, making it a grand total of 8 months. |
wow, 8 months. That puts the other Google acquisitions into perspective. I bet we'll be seeing JotSpot soon, with Google Gears functionality built in. |
Yes but you could use Writely in between (as I did). This sis not the case with Jotspot |
And when was JotSpot acquired? |
Call me the date man – Halloween, 2006 (October 31st). Eight months from then would be (gears whir)...June (aka now). |
so it won't be a full 8 months until the very end of June or very beginning of July- i think Writely took 8 months and 1 day |
That list makes you wonder if they actually built something in other fields than search:
Publishing (Blogger, YouTube, Docs, Jotspot, Picasa) = acquisitions Metrics (Analytics, Measure Map, Feedburner) = acquisitions Geoweb (Earth, Maps, Sketchup) = acquisitions AdSense = acquisition Personalized search = acq. Google Desktop's widgets = acq.
So what's left? Gmail, Calendar, Reader, Finance, orkut, AdWords (?!)... |
It doesn't need to have to have been started from scratch to have that Google ingenuity about it |
Thats because if it is snapped up by Google its likely because it had some kind of Google ingenuity. |
and it's easier to work with some pre-existing code and user base |
