For anyone unaware of this event, here's the link:

With rumours of a new Google-powered .mac web suite, as well a new iMac design since 2004, this could turn out to be quite special.

So far no word about Google yet. But they have announced that the Mac will see more games from EA in the future as well as a special project from ID software, the makers of Doom 3. Very cool stuff!

Colin Colehour [PersonRank 10]

One new .Mac feature announced so far:
New .Mac feature lets you browse any of your other computer's contents from anywhere on the internet. Your computers would update their IP addresses to the .Mac service so that you can share files between computers anytime.

Leopard will be able to run 32bit and 64bit apps at the same time. SWEET!

Mambo [PersonRank 10]

Google Trends is getting some screen time. Doesn't look anything special.

Ohhh... come on iMac... time's running out!

Colin Colehour [PersonRank 10]

Woah. Apple is bringing their Safari web browser to Windows. It will work on XP and Vista operating systems.

Colin Colehour [PersonRank 10]

The Apple iPhone 3rd party software info from Engadget keynote page:
"you can write amazing Web 2.0 and AJAX apps that look and behave exactly like apps on the iPhone, and these apps can integrate perfectly with iPhone services. They can make a call, check email, look up a location on Gmaps... don't worry about distribution, just put 'em on an internet server. They're easy to update, just update it on your server. They're secure, and they run securely sandboxed on the iPhone. And guess what, there's no SDK you need!"

Colin Colehour [PersonRank 10]

The keynote is over and no Google-.Mac announcement. No new iMac announcement that Mambo was looking forward to.

Mambo [PersonRank 10]

God, that keynote was lame.

SWEET!!!! New Apple.com!!!!

That's more like it. That's cheered me up.

Colin Colehour [PersonRank 10]

Their benchmark of Safari rendering speed showed the browser was faster at rendering than IE and Firefox.

Ionut Alex. Chitu [PersonRank 10]

Their benchmarks are a joke. Safari/Windows uses a lot of RAM and it's extremely slow. It also crashes every 3 minutes.

stefan2904 [PersonRank 10]

bad rendering and many chrashes. for exaple everytime i start typing in an textfield.... bad, apple, bad....

(but, its beta....rather pre-alpha...)

That is so weird that their output would be so much different than Safari on the Mac.

No problems with rendering the Google homepage on my laptop, which is running Safari for Windows.

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

I think the display bug is the part here which says "Go to Google Deutschland". As that is based on geolocation (they see I got a German IP) it might not show elsewhere. This bug does not happen on Mac Safari though, I just checked...

Alex [PersonRank 0]

I can't use anything related to bookmarks. Try to bookmark a page, Safari crashes, try to import some bookmarks, it crashes... :(On the other hand I really like the new Netscape Navigator and I'll stay with it until this beta gets better...

Jeremy Felt [PersonRank 1]

The announcement of Safari/Windows got me excited.... until I installed it and found out that you can't minimize the window by clicking on it in the task-bar, or right clicking and choosing minimizing. Only by clicking on the minimize button in the top right.

Call me picky, but that rates high on my personal usage...

Anybody else seeing the same thing?

TOMHTML [PersonRank 10]

I have downloaded it hours later. It crash just after the first click, images of Apple.com don't load, I can't enter anything in the adressbar or searchbar... it S-U-C-K-S

http://img526.imageshack.us/img526/6308/safaribouhhwo2.jpg

it even crash my computer...
(I have windows XP here, tomorow I will try with Vista...)

asdfasdf [PersonRank 1]

safari is definately not usable so far:S

It probably loads fast cause it does only load half of it.

funny how proud he was of the searching of other pcs if you have a .Mac....

Google Desktop does this for free with "search across computers" for over a year. Though when they introduced it, people went nuts over it saying Google Desktop was unsafe cause of it (which is crap, since you'd have to activate it). Now I wonder what they'll say about macs solution, it's pretty much the same.

Jennifer [PersonRank 0]

I think I will stick with Firefox, but this is interesting that they are offering it.

Ian Davies [PersonRank 2]

I have the same problem as TOMHTML, except it doesn't 'crash' for me – I don't get the error message. It simply doesn't work. Half of the UI is missing like the screenshot, and the Apple website is rendering VERY strangely. I can't enter anything into the address bar, and the right click menus are blank white rectangles. I trued uninstalling, rebooting, reinstalling, rebooting, and trying again, and I have the same thing. Not very good! Shame – I was looking forward to trying it out.Personally I think they should try to make their apps blend into Windows more, but I guess they want them to stand out as mac apps...

TOMHTML [PersonRank 10]

"I can't enter anything into the address bar, and the right click menus are blank white rectangles."
> This is exactly what I get.

I'm sure Apple developers do their pre-launch tests on emulated versions of Windows on Mac :-P

1 question-why?
There are allready so many browsers and its hardly going to generate extra revenue for them, but look how many d/ls they got this quick

> 1 question-why?

It might increase the popularity of Safari for the Mac, because it stops being a Mac-only browser, which in turn may give web agencies less arguments to ignore this browser in their list of supported browsers, thus making more web sites "Safari-enabled"... thus strengthening the position of the Mac because more sites on the web look better in it? OK, that's just a theory! :)

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

Mac for PC sounds like it's even worse than IE for Mac.

To be honest, I hope this doesn't become a widely used browser as it's just another one to add to the list for testing purposes – which will be a nightmare if it behaves differently to Safari on a Mac!

Philipp Lenssen [PersonRank 10]

True. At least with Firefox there were never really issues... FF Mac and Win version render the same, right?

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

I've never actually tested Firefox – but I think Netscape 6+ and Mozilla used to render exactly the same from what I remember.

Andreas Bovens [PersonRank 3]

It's interesting to see that Safari/Win uses Apple's subpixel font rendering tech (Quartz I suppose) instead of Windows' ClearType. First time that happens...

Colin Colehour [PersonRank 10]

What if this browser was released so people would test their web apps to be Safari compatible which means the apps could theoretically be iPhone compatible too.

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

Someone once told me that iTunes uses the Safari engine, which I guess would make sense since its controls are all Mac-like. Does anyone know if that's true? If so, surely you could hack your HOSTS file or firewall to make iTunes point to other websites instead of the iTunes store? And if it is true, I wonder why they didn't just release Safari for PC sooner...?

Andreas Bovens [PersonRank 3]

Tony, there was indeed this rumor, but it seems like iTunes is not using Webkit for rendering iTMS pages: http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/hyatt/archives/2004_06.html#005666

Jack Hynes [PersonRank 6]

I found Safari to be pretty good; no crashes, very fast page loads and I quite like the simple interface. I didn't have much time to play around as it was my sister's computer I installed it on (she likes it).

I tried to install it with wine under Ubuntu, the install went fine but it refused to load stating Windows errors.

[put at-character here]Philipp: I agree; it decreases the learning curve and therefore increases Mac OS purchasing desire.
I think this same technique may work with Amarok 2 will be released cross-platform on Linux, Mac and Windows simultaneously in October. On the other hand it is pretty much Linux's killer app (for me) and therefore give fewer reasons to convert...

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

I don't like FF Mac and FF Windows render identically... but very similar stuff.

Brinke Guthrie [PersonRank 10]

Timeline:

3pm PT: Installed Safari for Windows.

3:04pm: First crash.

3:06pm: Second crash.

3:07pm: Third crash.

3:08pm: Uninstalled.

Buh bye.

Sam Davyson [PersonRank 10]

Running the windows version via Boot Camp here. Seems to work fine to me.

Mysterius [PersonRank 10]

At last!
we can test our sites and apps on safari without leaving our seats :)

for everyday surfing, I think i'll stick to FF.

Safari works fine here... except that it doesn't render bold text. Everything works fine, but bold text is simply not rendered.

TOMHTML [PersonRank 10]

OK, it works with Windows Vista... 2 seconds

That's exactly the message I got Tony (well, in english)

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

For the record, Safari is working fine for me on Windows XP. I've been using it about 30 mins, visiting lots of different sites, and I've not noticed one single bug yet!

Pufone [PersonRank 0]

The benchmarks made by apple don't reflect the reality. That's marketing bullshit. And of course, the browser crashed like Windows ME on steroids: http://pufone.org/blog/wp-content/uploads/2007/06/safari_windows_error.png

It appears that new Windows Safari suffers about several security vulnerabilities:

David Maynor, Errata Security:

TOMHTML [PersonRank 10]

LOL,
when Google launch a Beta version: almost perfect
when Apple launch a Beta version: just a stupid beta...

Ian Davies [PersonRank 2]

To those (like me) who don't have any text showing up....
I seem to have fixed it!

1) Go to C:Program FilesSafari or wherever you installed Safari.
2) Open the Safari.resources folder and you'll see two fonts. Copy and paste them into your Windows Fonts folder (you should find it in the control panel).
3) Rename the Safari.resources folder to something else.
4) Open Safari using the Safari.exe icon in the Safari installer folder you're currently in. (Don't use the start menu or desktop icon, as this will initiate a repair process which will put the folder back).
5) Click through the error messages that appear and close Safari if it doesn't close by itself.
6) Rename the folder back to Safari.resources
7) Open Safari.
8) Et voilà!

Worked for me. It does render pages faster than Firefox, but it seems a few of the Google web apps don't have full functionality. I guess this is all part of Apple's reasoning for porting the browser to Windows – the more users it has, the more likely web developers are to make sure their sites & apps are compatible. It feels very strange having mac-style font anti-aisling on a PC! Try turning its strength down to 'Light' in Preferences if you find it a bit strong.

Ian Davies [PersonRank 2]

I found after doing that fix that there were still a couple of fonts missing – it seems that the Safari installer is missing some out if you have a large number of fonts. No matter: go to C:Documents and SettingsusernameLocal SettingsApplication DataApple ComputerSafari
(replacing username with your Windows username), and open up Fonts.plist in Notepad. Add the following before the first </dict> :

<key>Times New Roman</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsTIMES.TTF</string>
<key>Times New Roman Bold</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsTIMESBD.TTF</string>
<key>Times New Roman Italic</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsTIMESI.TTF</string>
<key>Times New Roman Bold Italic</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsTIMESBI.TTF</string>
<key>Verdana</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsverdana.TTF</string>
<key>Verdana Bold</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsverdanab.TTF</string>
<key>Verdana Italic</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsverdanai.TTF</string>
<key>Verdana Bold Italic</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsverdanaz.TTF</string>
<key>Tahoma</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsTAHOMA.TTF</string>
<key>Tahoma Bold</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontstahomabd.TTF</string>
<key>Trebuchet MS</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontstrebuc.TTF</string>
<key>Trebuchet MS Bold</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontstrebucbd.TTF</string>
<key>Trebuchet MS Bold Italic</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontstrebucbi.TTF</string>
<key>Trebuchet MS Italic</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontstrebucit.TTF</string>
<key>Lucida Grande</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsLucida Grande.ttf</string>
<key>Lucida Grande Bold</key>
<string>C:WINDOWSFontsLucida Grande Bold.ttf</string>

You'll then want to save the file and make it read only (right click, properties...) so Safari doesn't write over it. That will add the important fonts to Safari's database, and all the text will now show up. Hopefully somebody at Apple will see this and fix the installer!
