Google got a 5-1 green light from the Mountain View City Council on Tuesday night to start pitching ideas on developing 9.2 acres of land into office space.
The Internet company has shown interest in a large city-owned site since the council voted in March to change half of that land's zoning from cultural and educational use to office and research and development. The other half has been slated for a hotel and conference center project since 2001, Councilman Matt Pear said.
A Google spokesman declined to give any details about its plans for the site before the meeting.
