Gmail product management director Georges Harik, as quoted by CNet, says Google plans to double Gmail’s 1 GB storage capacity to 2GB. After that, “Google will add a yet-to-be-determined amount of extra storage daily, with no plans to stop.” (My inbox currently shows 1059 MB, so it looks like that’s a first daily extra.)
Harik also said:
“We wanted to make sure we have a plan in place for when people reach their storage limit. We don’t want people to worry that they might run out. (...)
One gigabyte did seem like a lot, but it turns out there are a lot of heavy users of mail. They send attachments, share photos. It all adds up.”
On a related note, I could try out Gmail’s Rich formatting for the first time today (it’s a link right above the main text box when you click “Compose”).
