Google Print and Public Domain Books

Google Print, the Google project which scans books and makes them searchable online, usually only shows small snippets from books. For books that have passed into the public domain (like those works until the year 1923) can be read fully, as the Google Blog reports. Google calls this “part 1”, a small taste of what’s to come.

Now I could find some works where I could browse through the pages by appending a query with “date:1500-1923”, however, I could only see small excerpts from the examples given in Google’s blog post – like Daisy Miller. (Clicking on the link below the excerpts which reads “Where’s the rest of this book?” brings me to the help page including the following sentence: “For books that we have scanned from a library which are still in copyright, you will only be able to view the bibliographic information and a few short sentences of text around your search term.”)

On a related note, after doing some more searches through Google Print I received the following message, offering a captcha at the end:

“We’re sorry...

... but we can’t process your request right now. A computer virus or spyware application is sending us automated requests, and it appears that your computer or network has been infected.”
