Google Answers Shuts Down

In the past, Google’s treatment of their Q&A site Google Answers had already been a disappointment to many Google Answers Researchers (I too answered questions as GAR a couple of years ago, around the time when I started this blog in Malaysia) – Google didn’t push their service, and in fact slowly started to get rid of entry points towards it, too. Now, they’re closing the site completely, the official Google blog announced.

Is Google incapable of getting off true community sites in the way competitors/ ex-competitors like Yahoo, MySpace or YouTube do? Without disclosing the actual reasons behind the shut-down, Google now calls Google Answers a “great experiment” which started as a “rough idea from Larry Page” – only that this experiment happened to involve actual people.
