Google buy tonnes of domains, I don't see why people get all excited when they buy some more.

I had started a post on this topic here.

The reason being that monitoring domain name info for Google or any other company can also signal new, changed, modified services.

All of this is part of something much larger, often referred to as competitive intelligence.

In fact, many companies and researches spend their days doing many forms of CI and using various tools.

Domain name monitoring is just one of MANY tactics that can be used.

For more see: Society of Competitive Intellligence Professionals. Many SCIP members are also librarians.

In fact, domain name monitoring is so valuable that some database providers for access to a databases with historical domain name info and powerful ways to search it.

For example:

Considering that web mashups are applications created using different APIs etc., i think that it will be aimed towards developers. Perhaps a new API. Web search API with new features?

I agree with Gary on this "All of this is part of something much larger, often referred to as competitive intelligence. "

This is important info to monitor and track- its done all over the place in various verticals :)_

As the author of a different 'SearchMash', I was interested to see that there's actually now content on http://searchmash.com , which there wasn't even a few days ago (at least it didn't show up in my searches for the searchmash term).

It's tough to tell this is actually a Google site, the only mention I could find is "SearchMash is a website operated by Google Inc." on the privacy page.

Interestingly it's the top link if I search on google for searchmash, even though no one else is linking to it. One of the benefits of being google I would guess.

Indeed, http://www.searchmash.com does seem to be operated by Google:

<< SearchMash is a website operated by Google Inc. The Google Privacy Policy [link] describes how we treat personal information when you use our products and services, including information provided when you use SearchMash. In addition, the following describes our privacy practices that are specific to SearchMash. >>

From: http://www.searchmash.com/about/privacy.html

Also:

<< SearchMash is a website operated by Google Inc. ("we" or "us") and your use of the site is subject to the following terms and conditions (the "Terms of Service"). >>

From: http://www.searchmash.com/about/tos.html

Its HTTP Server header certainly seems to imply it's being run by Google:

Server: GFE/1.3

And the 404 error is a basic one similar to other Google services:

http://www.searchmash.com/404

Maybe this is a demo site of their new service...?

Yes, Tony is correct.

In my original ResourceShelf post, that PL mentions, SearchMash.com is listed. It was registered by Google several days before most of the others on on September 13, 2006.

The More Web Pages (and More Images if Searching only images) doesn't work for me.

It'll get slower. I noticed you posted it on Digg (Just 1 Minute before me ;))

Why didn't Google launch this directly from the Google Domain or with a Google interface and Logo ?

Tony Ruscoe [PersonRank 10]

I guess they've tried to remove all Google branding to show what it *should* be like when someone else creates a mashup...

Also interesting to see it's not part of Google Labs. Basically, a way to test various UI ideas in a single place.

Btw, the image results on a web results page is far from new. Ask. first started doing this (if the query suggested it) in 2003. Google and Yahoo also offer it (query dependent) in 2005.
